ABSTRACT
Objective: In this study we aim to evaluate whether early postoperative bathing of a surgical site increase the incidence of infection. Material and Methods: In this study clinical record of patients who underwent elective cesarean section between January 2012-December 2015, at two tertiary referral hospital was analyzed retrospectively. Patients allowed to shower or bathe (Group 1) as a part of their normal daily hygiene before suture removal were compared with who were instructed to keep the site dry (Group 2) until suture removal with respect to postoperative wound infection rate. Results: All the operations in both groups were performed by the same author. A total of 703 patients met trial eligibility were recruited; 476 patients in Group 1 and 227 in Group 2. The overall incidence of surgical site infection requiring antibiotics and/or debridement and/or hospitalization was (1.9%), (1.8%), respectively and no significant between-group differences were evident (p=0.906). Serous fluid leaking from incision which did not require any intervention was slightly higher in Group 1 (n=19, 4%) than Group 2 (n=6, 2.6%) but the results did not reach statistical significance (p=0.367). Conclusion: It looks like that there is no conclusive evidence regarding the benefits or harms of bathing, since the postoperative rate of infective complications requiring intervention were similar in both groups. Only serous discharges that do not require drug treatment or hospitalization are slightly higher in groups of allowing a surgical site to become wet, but these differences were not statistically significant.
