ABSTRACT
Immune thrombocytopenic purpura is one of the most common immune disorders occurring in pregnancy. This disorder is caused by destruction of platelets by antibodies and sequestration by the spleen. The diagnosis can be made when a patient has a persistently low platelet count (<100.000/mL) and the absence of other hematological disorders. The primary goal of therapy for patients with immune thrombocytopenic purpura is to keep patients hematologically asymptomatic rather than to keep platelet counts at more than 100.000/mL. Treatment choices include glucocorticoids, intravenous immunoglobulin and splenectomy.
