ABSTRACT
Objective: Surgical induction of rat endometriosis to find a research model for endometriosis that can be used to study those aspects of endometriosis which cannot be investigated in women because of the ethic problems. Institution: Erciyes University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Kayseri. Material and Methods: Fifteen female Swiss-Albino rats weighing 160-230 g were used, in this study. After intraperitoneal thiopental anesthesia laparotomy was performed and uterine horn was excised under sterile conditions in 10 rats of the study group. The implants were placed into abdomen with the endometrial surface facing mesentery. Fat tissue was used instead of uterine horn in the control group of 5 rats. Six weeks later second laparotomy was performed and the implants were excised. After histopathological procedures and hematoxylen eosin application, preparations were analysed. Findings: In the study group macroscopic and microscopic analysis of the implants revelated that endometriosis were developed, but similar developments were not observed in the control group. Conclusion: It is possible to induce endometriosis surgically in rats. Experimental rat endometriosis model offers an opportunity to study those aspects of endometriosis which cannot be investigated in women because of the ethic problems. Endometriozis, rat
