ABSTRACT
It is stated that maternal factors such as older maternal age, imbalanced nutrition, obesity, and stress may have negative effects on fetal development in pregnancy. In this study, existing literature related to effects of maternal stress factor on fetal development has been reviewed. It is informed that maternal stress factor may effect mother's and fetus' health as a result of changing feto-maternal physiology in pregnancy. Prenatally stressed fetus was reported to be preterm birth, low birth weight, intrauterine growth retardation, and spontaneous abortion, fetal mortality, reduction of brain cell prolifera-tion, increment of basal levels of stress hormones (etc. corticosterone, adrenocorticotropic hormone) and changes in psycosocial behaviours. On the other hand, exposuring the stress during the prenatal period can show its effects during adulthood. Therefore further research is needed about effects of maternal stress factors on fetus.
